Monitoring and Evaluation: Economic Impact Calculator Training
23 MAY 2017 - 23 MAY 2017

Both nationally and internationally, there is a growing acknowledgement of the important role that arts, culture and heritage play in economic growth and development. Economic impact studies are a powerful way of demonstrating the financial benefits of hosting cultural festivals and events and can be effective in communicating the value of the event to funders, local residents and other stakeholders. However, the methods used need to be valid and based on realistic, verifiable data. Economic impact studies can also be expensive. The South African Cultural Observatory has developed the South African Festivals Economic Impact Calculator (SAFEIC), which is a free online economic impact tool specifically to estimate the economic impact of a festival on a host economy. It has been carefully, and conservatively, designed by and international team of university economists so as to produce results that are as reliable and valid as possible for a wide range of events.
