Requirements / Background

The workshop includes practical work. Participants should have a basic, working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and bring their own laptops (with MS Excel installed).

In 2015, the Department of Arts and Culture established a South African Cultural Observatory which includes participants from several South African Universities and other significant role-players. Leading South African economists and statisticians, in collaboration with South African government officials and international collaborators, are developing approaches and tools for the tasks and objectives of the Observatory.

During this short introductory hands-on workshop you will become familiar with the basics of data sources, data collection, cleaning, organising and basic explanatory analysis. Considerable emphasis will be placed on data visualisation. We shall use data from the national mapping study on cultural and creative industries.

After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the sources of data for Cultural Statistics in South Africa
  • Understand the most appropriate methods for cultural data visualization
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the basics of internationally recognized methods for assessing
    national cultural development and growth
  • Grasp the difficulties, challenges and opportunities in cultural data analysis in South Africa
  • Use MS EXCEL to perform basic explanatory analysis and visualisation of cultural data
  • Understand (via practical examples) the basics of data analysis reporting
  • Understand the Cerographic Coordinate system and how to find the correct locations using
    Google Maps

The Workshop is free and includes training material. Lunch and refreshments will be served.

The closing date for registration is Thursday 3rd November 2016. Please note that a maximum of 30 attendants can be accommodated and registrations will be confirmed on a first-come; first-served basis.
